Govt proposes setting up a Hastkala Academy at New Delhi

The government of India has initiated a proposal for setting up a Hastkala Academy at New Delhi under which research work on development of the handicraft sector will be taken up, Parliament was informed today by Textiles Minister Smriti Irani in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Smriti Irani said that an amended technology upgradation fund scheme (ATUFS) is in place for the textiles industry, which as become effective from January.

India’s blended spun yarns export was worth US$30.3 million in May 2016, down 5.8 per cent YoY while volumes were at 10.5 million kg. During April 2016, blended spun yarns export value was up 11.2 per cent YoY while volumes rose 19.5 per cent as compared to the same month last year.

5.3 million kg of PC yarns was exported from India during May. Polyester cottons yarns were exported to 47 countries in May 2016, of which, Bangladesh and Honduras were the largest importers of PC yarn from India in May followed by Colombia.

Second-hand clothes, popularly known as mitumba, are mostly imported from North America and Europe into Kenya. Most of these second-hand clothes are sold in Gikomba Market, Nairobi. It is estimated to hold close to 65,000 traders. According to the Finance Bill 2016, all imported clothes will attract a duty of $0.4 (Sh40.8) per kilogramme of clothes up from $0.2 (Sh20.4) per kilogramme, the Government believes is as a win-win solution to the mitumba trade that has crippled the country’s textile industry.

Pakistani textile manufacturers urged the government to withdraw three percent import duty on cotton to arrest the decline in the size of domestic cotton. Union Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar on Friday at a press conference talking about the Textile Ministry’s performance in the past two years said that under the scheme for integrated textile parks (SITP) implemented to stimulate development of infrastructure, 24 new textile parks have been sanctioned in the last two years, facilitating investment of Rs 4,500 crore and generating employment for 66,000 people.

Due to rise in the demand from the textile industry, the cotton market maintained an upward trend on Saturday with most of the buying confined to premium quality lint at Rs6,000/maund, dealers said.

According to cotton dealers, around 6,400 bales of cotton by different traders in Sindh and Punjab were finalised at an average price of Rs5,500/maund. However, the low quality cotton was being traded somewhere around Rs4,000/maund.

Spinning mills seem busy in short covering, as demand for yarn and textiles starts picking up momentum.
