The CCI has started arrangements for ginning and storage of cotton for the ensuing harvesting season. The central government had newly lifted the MSP on medium-staple fibre cotton by 28% to Rs 5,150 per quintal and long-staple by 26% to Rs 5,450. Traders expect that the hike would help firm up prices in India compared to the last season, when those were lower compared with the global market.

Cotton prices continued to slide for the third consecutive session amid slow demand from the spinners on Wednesday. Ginners holding substantial stocks of unsold cotton and with rapidly falling prices are likely to suffer huge losses.

Cotton broker Adil Naseem said that the declining lint price trend indicated that a weaker US dollar against other leading currencies is impacting commodity prices.

Cotton rates stabilize with the arrivals gathering pace

With the arrival of raw cotton going up in the second week of January, the rates of cotton crop stabilizing in the range of Rs 5,200-5,350 per quintal in Punjab markets. In the corresponding period in 2017, rates of raw cotton were Rs 5,600-5,700 per quintal.

Till the first week, about 3,000 bales on an average were arriving every day in the state markets. Now, over 4,500 bales are arriving in the mandis for the last three days. Starting from September 1, 2017 till January 9, a total of 5.55 lakh bales (1bale=170kg) of raw cotton had arrived in the markets of Punjab.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) is prepared to procure some 100 lakh bales of cotton either at Minimum Support Price (MSP) or market prices this season with the cotton arrivals beginning in full swing, according to CCI chief MM Chokalingam. So far this season CCI has already purchased some 62,000 bales of cotton at Minimum Support Price (MSP).

The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) has urged the union government to direct the state run Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to procure 100 lakh bales ( a bales is 170 kgs) as a record bumper crop is expected during the 2017-18 season (October-September). ICF stated that this cotton should be sold directly only to textile mills, which would help maintain stable prices throughout the year.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will be setting up three new cotton procurement centres at Mulugu, Kataram and Chityal in the Bhupalpally district for the convenience of the farmers. The farmers need not go distant places to sell their produce, said District Collector A Murali.

The collector also conducted a review meeting over the cotton procurement for the season 2017-18 with the officials of the marketing department, ginning mills owners and cotton traders at his office in Bhupalpally on Wednesday.

The Telangana state government has urged the Centre to open 150 business centres of Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to enable farmers sell their produce as the extent of cotton sown area increasing two fold this year. During 2015-2016 the CCI had opened only 84 centres, this year the farmers would be requiring at least 150 centres to sell their produce.

It has also sought relaxation in CCI purchasing norms as cotton gets discoloured to some extent due to heavy rains in October and November.
