Cotton Corporation of India to set up 3 new centres in Bhupalpally district

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will be setting up three new cotton procurement centres at Mulugu, Kataram and Chityal in the Bhupalpally district for the convenience of the farmers. The farmers need not go distant places to sell their produce, said District Collector A Murali.

The collector also conducted a review meeting over the cotton procurement for the season 2017-18 with the officials of the marketing department, ginning mills owners and cotton traders at his office in Bhupalpally on Wednesday.

With the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) resorting to purchase cotton at commercial rates from different parts of key cotton growing regions in the country, cotton prices have moved up and also improving the market sentiment. Prices have firmed up to R41,500 per candy from the prevailing rates of R38,000 and farmers are now beginning to get better rates from traders, according to top officials of CCI.

Union Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar on Friday at a press conference talking about the Textile Ministry’s performance in the past two years said that under the scheme for integrated textile parks (SITP) implemented to stimulate development of infrastructure, 24 new textile parks have been sanctioned in the last two years, facilitating investment of Rs 4,500 crore and generating employment for 66,000 people.

Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta after a meeting of the state-run Cotton Advisory Board on Tuesday said that they are expecting higher demand from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam. This will offset poor demand from China.

India, the world's biggest cotton producer, is likely to export 6.8 million bales in the 2015/16 season, up 18 percent from a year ago as demand from Asia is expected to improve, a senior government official said.

Higher exports will cap global prices, but raise domestic prices and help bring down government purchases at the support price.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has shown reluctance to start procurement process of the season despite directions from Union textile minister for state Santosh Kumar Gangwar on October 1, leaving the market in the hands of private traders as the farmers have started bringing the first lot of cotton harvest to the mandis.

Even Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had met Gangwar on October 11, appealing him to direct the CCI to start procurement of cotton crop which had come under whitefly attack.

China top buyer of cotton from India cutting in imports depressing prices, India will be forced to make large-scale government cotton purchases from farmers for a second straight year. In the marketing year that ended on Sept.30, India spent 160 billion Indian rupees ($2.5 billion) to buy 8.7 million bales of cotton at a government-set minimum support price (MSP), against just 400,000 bales in the previous year.

There is an expected slump in cotton output by 5-10 lakh bales likely this year and an expected rise of cotton prices as some farmers from Telangana have demanded an MSP of Rs 5,000 per quintal.

Earlier, during his meeting with farmers, Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar had said the minimum support price (MSP) for cotton has been fixed at Rs 3,936-4,100 per quintal, depending on the moisture content.

But his ministry is in constant touch with the Finance Ministry for revising the price upwards.

Govt revises cotton output estimate to 39 mn bales for current marketing year

The government has revised its cotton production estimate for the current marketing year due to unseasonal rains and hail storms across the county from 40 million bales to 39 million bales. Cotton crop prospects adversely impacted particularly in the central zone, textile minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. One bale equals 170 kg.

The main cotton growing states include Rajasthan, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Total demand is estimated to be at 39 million bales in 2014-15, compared to 41.68 million bales in the previous season.
