Indonesian textile exports to key markets have declined as many countries have reduced imports of textiles in the first half of 2017 amid bleak global economic conditions. Shipments to the USA fell 3.6 percent (y/y), to the European Union by 4.0 percent (y/y), and to Japan by nearly 5 percent (y) in the January-June 2017 period.

Indonesian domestic textile products have continued to lose their foothold in competition on the domestic market over the past five years as imported products control 70 percent of the country’s domestic textile market, which is estimated to reach US$10 billion a year leaving only 30 percent of the market for domestic products, said the Indonesian Textile Association ( API) chairman Ade Sudrajat on Wednesday.

Textile producers in Central Java sees good demand for their textile products from the Middle East countries and hence they are keen to expand their export market to the Middle East, stated the Indonesian Textile Association (API) in Central Java.

Chairman of API Central Java Agung Wahono said that they already have a good demand for their exports from the Middle East countries. However, so far, they have yet to become the main export market for the Central Java textile products.

Indonesia’s domestic market continues to be dominated by illegal imported textile product. The origin of around 16.7 percent of all textile product consumption could not be traced. The textile and garment products that were illegally available throughout 2016 has reached 31,000 tons, said Secretary General of the Synthetic Manufacturers Association of Indonesia (Apsyfi), Redma Wirawasta.

The Indonesian government has introduced a third stimulus package stipulates that industrial activities get electricity price cuts from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. However, the textile industry and the state electricity company PLN, which supplies the power, interpret the stipulation differently.

Based on PLN’s understanding, the price cut will only be given to companies consuming more than they usually do every day. The textile industry, meanwhile, says the price cut should be given to industrial activities during the specified timeframe regardless of the amount of their power consumption.

Indonesian textile industry would still be pressured in the second half of the year and predicted that sales and exports of textile products would remain sluggish, according to Ade Sudrajat, head of Indonesian Textile Association (API).

The domestic textile and related products market has been projected to generate Rp 60 trillion ($4.3 billion) in the second half of the year as local products hold only 20 percent of market share and the industry feels the effects of a dragging economy, an association chief said.

The performance of the TPT industry over the first quarter of 2015 was relatively poor, suffering a contraction with negative growth of 0.98 percent year-on-year, making it a worse performer than the manufacturing industry, which saw growth of 3.87 percent, and Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which saw growth of 4.71 percent.
