At the current moment, the textile industry has been contributing about 5 % and operating at 30% capacity as secondhand clothes have had a negative impact. But with the ban on second-hand clothes it will see the sector doubling its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 10 percent, according to The Zimbabwe Textile Manufacturers’ Association (ZITMA).

The newly elected chairman M Senthil Kumar of Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) at its 56th Annual General Meeting held yesterday, said that as the textile industry was equiped with excess production capacity it first and foremost urgently requires market access policy to have a level playing field in global markets.

Therefore, the government should expedite conclusion of Free Trade Agreements with China, EU, Australia, Canada and other countries and gain market access, he added.

The textile industry has been facing issues in getting subsidy under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS). Some member-units had applied for subsidy under the scheme which is pending for the past one and a half years.

Strike has been called by Bhiwandi powerlooms since Monday demanding control on yarn prices and permission to export cloth . Approximately 9 lakh people are dependent on Bhiwandi’s powerlooms and related businesses of which nearly three-fourths of the 9 lakh powerloom units in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi are on strike. Government has set its sights on the development in the organised and unorganised sectors of the textile industry, which is one of the mainstays of the national economy. The initiatives of the government have raised hopes of resurrection of the Indian handloom and textile industries, said K. Radharaman of The House of Angadi, which has a 600-year legacy in the textile trade.

Setting up integrated textile parks, increasing export, development of handlooms, promotion of handicrafts and increasing sericulture are some of the elements the government has stressed upon.
