Union Textile Minister proposes on how to make good quality Indian cotton a global brand

According to Sanjay K Jain, Chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry and board member, Cotton Association of India, the matter is currently under deliberation. “The Suvin cotton produced in Tamil Nadu and Shankar 6 produced in Gujarat are both good quality cotton and can be projected as a global brand. The matter is in the deliberation stage,” he told at the session.

The proposal, once ready, would be placed before the Textile Ministry as well as the Commerce Ministry, Jain said. He however was unable to give a timeline for the same.

Orient Craft Limited, a 40-year-old apparels manufacturer and exporter based in Gurugram, Haryana, is formally set to commence its operation in Irba, Ormanjhi block, some 25km from Ranchi, from Saturday, the first such plant in the state of Jharkhand, to support its growing export business. The new plant will be jointly inaugurated by Union textile minister Smriti Irani and chief minister Das.

Orient Craft supplies a wide range of garments, home furnishings and knitwear to brands across the world, including GAP, Polo, Marks & Spencer, among others.

Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani responding to a question during a press conference today said that 'GST on the job work has been brought down from 18 to five per cent.

It has been duly addressed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and the GST Council.

The concern of the textile industry has been addressed by reducing GST rates on job work of textile yarn and fabric manufacturing from 18 to 5 percent and this has been done for the entire textile chain.

Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani said that a conference on GST will be held soon to decide the rate, hinting that the textile industry is expected to have uniform GST rate, responding to pleas at a meeting of textile industries associations and stakeholders in Coimbatore, for fixing five per cent GST rate, the lowest slab for the industry.

The Minister urged the industry associations to give suggestions and views during meetings that will be held in different cities shortly. She also indicated that there might be a uniform rate across the value chain.

Union Textile Minister, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, joined the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) designed by NITRA at Ajrakhpur, Bhuj (Gujarat) on 18th March 2017.

The 150 KLD CETP project has been assigned to NITRA for implementation by Ministry of Textiles through Handicrafts Mega Cluster Mission (HMCM). NITRA designed a modern treatment scheme integrated with water reclamation for the CETP.

The first ever Apparel and Garment Making Centre was inaugurated in Meghalaya by the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani. The government is working on a policy to limit the flow of cheap cloth in India for which it is contemplating imposing a “dumping duty” on cloth that comes from China. A policy regarding the issue would soon be made in the Parliament, said Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday.

Union Textile Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar advises government of Arunachal Pradesh to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for establishment of a textile park in the state at the earliest, during his meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Kameng Dolo.

He said that the Centre has assured funds for setting up a textile park in Arunachal Pradesh and the state government would be informed as and when the proposal would be cleared by the ministry.
