APTMA to establish garment manufacturing with investment of $7b

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) to resolve the crisis the industry has been embroiled in for years has announced that its members are ready to establish 1,000 garment manufacturing plants with a total investment of $7 billion near major textile producing cities like Lahore, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Kasur, Multan, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Peshawar.

The proposed 1,000 plants will install half a million stitching machines, which will boost annual production to three billion pieces.

Pakistan has managed to produce in total 11.485 million bales up to Feb 15, as against 10.685m bales in last season and 7.49 percent more cotton this season (2017-18) over the corresponding period last year.

The nominal increase in cotton production is a strong indication that the crop continues to face multiple issues —including less cultivation area and lack of research and development — for the last three consecutive seasons.

Pakistan’s newly appointed Minister for Commerce and Textile Muhammad Pervaiz Malik is mulish on boosting the country’s declining textile exports on priority by resolving traders’ issues. After assuming charge on August 8, Malik said that the government will take all appropriate measures to expedite the finalization of Preferential and Free Trade Agreements with various countries.

Also informed that the process of paying tax refunds to the exporters will be expedited, one of the main issues of the business community.

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) after announcing its decision that they are closing down their textile mills over dull attitude of the government, delay in releasing refunds and higher cost of doing business, the local markets witnessed sharp drop in cotton prices.

The chairman Cotton Ginners Forum, Ahsanulhaq from Rahim Yar Khan said that on the first day of trading session at cotton market, the cotton prices dropped sharply by Rs 300 to Rs 6100 per maund.

Pakistan, one of the largest raw cotton exporter to bridge the gap between the production and consumption of raw cotton will have to foot a bill of around $1.58 billion for the import of 4.5 million bales (170kg each) as cotton production is expected to be around 10.54m bales in 2016-17.

Pakistan has been an importer for the last two years. Last year, Pakistan imported around 2.7m bales from India at a cost of $800m. With cotton production clocking up at 15m bales in 2014-15 and 9.5m bales in 2015-16.
