Textile mills attempting for cut in hank yarn obligation

The association said that the mills are unable to market the hank yarn as the demand has reduced over the years. But, they might face action for not meeting the hank yarn obligation as hank yarn is covered under Essential Commodities Act. The Ministry should hence reduce the hank yarn obligation to 10 % from the current 40 %. In the letter to the minister from the association and its members, the mills pointed out that between 1987-1988 and 2009-2010, the number of handlooms declined by 41 % (from 36.10 lakh looms to 21.47 lakh).

Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), NIFT-TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute, and the Indian Texpreneurs Federation is organizing a three day Textile Research Conclave on February 10 under the support of Union Ministry of Textiles in the knitwear hub of India, Tirupur.

The objective of the event is to encourage product diversification, productivity, and sustainability in textile clusters, said TEA president Raja Shanmugam.

Indian Texpreneurs Federation, an apex body of the textile industry, strongly believes that the speculative price increase this week in cotton to the tune of Rs. 1,500 per candy would not sustain and was only a short-term speculative increase and that cotton prices would come down.

ITF convenor Prabhu Dhamodharan said that though there are issues in the ‘quality of crop’ in the current cotton year in a few states, overall there would not be much drop in cotton crop this year.

The textile industry in and around Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur and part of Bengaluru was facing shortage of labour, particularly skilled workers, which at any given time requires three lakh to five lakh workers, a board member of Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) Srihari Balakrishnan said.

He was speaking at a function organized to distribute certificates and appointment orders in ITF member mills trained under Skill Development Programme.

Indian Texpreneurs Federation, an apex body of textile mills in the region alongwith its total members of 35 spinning mills have formed a consortium on a trial basis to purchase quality cotton from ginners of Maharashtra and Telangana with zero trash and low level contamination.

ITF Convenor Prabhu Dhamodharan said that even one percent savings by way of good quality, better pricing, timely purchase will help spinning sector reduce its cost of manufacturing. The consortium, which required 11 lakh bales per year, has purchased two lakh bales this year.
