SIMA demand for reduced power tariff

The Southern India Mills’ Association through its Chairman M. Senthil Kumar has put forth an argument that as the price of the fuels for power generation has come down; the power tariff should be reduced.

The State is now having surplus power which is available under open access at a lower cost too. Thus, the SIMA, representing textile mills in the state, has asked the State Government to reduce power tariff for high tension consumers, and consider separate tariff for textile industry.

The Indonesian government has introduced a third stimulus package stipulates that industrial activities get electricity price cuts from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. However, the textile industry and the state electricity company PLN, which supplies the power, interpret the stipulation differently.

Based on PLN’s understanding, the price cut will only be given to companies consuming more than they usually do every day. The textile industry, meanwhile, says the price cut should be given to industrial activities during the specified timeframe regardless of the amount of their power consumption.

The government had initially estimated disbursal of Rs18,000 crore under the Technology Funds Scheme (TUFS) but with the increasing interest from the textile industry and the opportunities that lie ahead government is now looking to disburse textile funds of around Rs 30,000 crore under ATUFS scheme by 2022, said Santosh Kumar Gangwar, union minister of textiles, independent charge on the sidelines of the Make in India event held in Mumbai.

Cotton output of Pakistan down by 33.5pc

According to the report issued by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association on Monday, Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to 9.475 million tonnes or 9,475,729 bales have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of January 15, 2016 registering a shortfall of 33.5 per cent compared to 14.251m bales a year earlier.

This shortfall would inflict a loss of around $6 billion on GDP — of which $1.5bn would be suffered by cotton growers and $4.5bn by the industry and exporters, experts say.

The government last week notified the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (A-TUFS) for textile sector but did not mention about the committed liabilities during 'blackout and leftout' period in 2010-11. Union Minister Santosh Gangwar said that the government is making efforts towards resolving the issue of settlement of committed liabilities of around Rs 3,000 crore arising out of 'blackout and leftout' period cases under technology upgrade scheme for textile industry.

Textile mills in Pakistan suffering losses due to high cost of electricity

During the last three and a half months, over one million spindles capacity has been closed down in Pakistan mainly because of the unbearable high cost of doing business, said Tariq Saud, chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).

He said that all these spindles were predominantly contributing to the exports of the country.

With the textile industry’s strong demand to reduce hank yarn obligation, the Textile Commissioner, Kavita Gupta plans to take up a study of the actual hank yarn requirement in the country. She said that they are also trying to create a data base for different segments of the textile industry.

Regarding the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS), Ms. Gupta said that there was a proposal to modify the scheme and the review was under progress.
