Technical textile expected to attract Rs. 1 lakh cr investments by 2025

At a conference on technical textiles and non-wovens organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Coimbatore on Thursday, Mr. Senthil Kumar, chairman of Southern India Mills’ Association said that technical textiles is one of the fastest growing segments in the textile industry and it is expected to attract Rs. 1 lakh crore investments by 2025.

Of the 12 major technical textile items, packtech has the largest share with 42 percent. The next are industrial textiles and home textiles, each accounting for about 10 percent.

The clothing industry can now do away with the archaic laws like labelling of garments and easing the Legal Metrology Act for clothing industry. As government decides exemption of Readymade Grment from the packaged Commodities Act.

The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), the apex body for the Indian apparel industry, thanked the Textile Minister, Smriti Irani for encouraging the exemption of Readymade Garment from the packaged Commodities Act.

Textile units to register online and provide production data

The Government has made another move post demonetization.They have made it mandatory for all textile units across the value chain, except handloom, khadi and jute, will have to register online and provide data on production.

While the registration will be one-time, production details should be shared by the units every month. Units can do this online from their premises or make use of the infrastructure available at the Regional Offices of the Textile Commissioner or powerloom service centres.

As ginners keen on raising asking prices, dealers said the cotton market on Wednesday witnessed slow trading activity. The official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 6250 . In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2600-3250, while in Punjab, the phutti rates were at Rs 2800 and Rs 3500, as per 40 kg.

The supply crunch in the textile industry had driven up prices higher than international prices and since the traders are unable to meet obligations, buyers could look to other markets. Cotton prices across the country are ruling high on subdued arrivals.

The lack of demand in the apparels industry has also impacted arrivals and although farmers are getting high prices, they prefer to hold back because of the currency shortage in the market.

Demonetization has affected cotton arrivals in the market as farmers are not bringing cotton to the mandis due to widespread prevalence of cash payments. . There has been a 30 percent drop in arrivals, said Atul P Asher, secretary, Indian Cotton Federation (ICF). Business has come down and only 10% of the ginning factories are operating.

Trading activity at Pakistan cotton market witnessed rising demand for quality cotton pushing prices higher on Thursday where leading spinners and some exporters remained in the front of buying spree.

The Karachi Cotton Association’s spot rates saw rise by Rs50, to Rs6,300 per maund (around 37 kilograms).

Buyer remain under panic due to confusion over cotton imports from India and indirect ban based on reports that Indian cotton shipments failed to fulfil phyto-sanitary certification, threatening the $822 million-a-year trade.

Post demonetization, the textile industry has launched a drive to digitize the industry in the pretext of the closure of many textile units after the Government’s financial move. Due to the cash crunch and also recession in the textile industry, both the textile traders association and textile procession association had started working on a plan to deal with the situation.

The textile industry has planned to install swipe machines at thousands of textile trading shops, while owners of textile processing units have started opening bank accounts for their workers to beat the cash crunch.

The President of The Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA), Mrs Grace Adereti, urged the Federal Government to establish a cotton corporation in the country in order to boost production of the commodity and revitalize the textile industry.
