Pakistan textile policy 2009-14 fails to achieve the set export target

The Pakistan Textile Policy 2009-14 has failed bleakly to achieve its target of doubling exports of the country’s textile industry. The plan comprised short-term support actions and long-term initiatives aimed at promoting value addition on a wider scale.

When the policy was unveiled, textile exports were touching $12 billion in 2009-10. Fast forward to 2012-13, the figure went up slightly at around $13 billion. However, the shipments were nowhere near the target of $25 billion.

The textile industry has an 8% share in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

DGFT seeks to phase out the export subsidies of textile sector in coming FTP

As India attained export competitiveness in the textile sector in 2008-09 and as per the threshold set by the World Trade Organization (WTO), it has to phase out the export subsidies provided to the sector by 2018.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) department has prepared made a case in writing to the department of revenue asking it to not provide incentive to the textile sector in upcoming foreign trade policy (FTP) which is likely to be announced next month, as India has reached the export competitiveness in the sector.

Intexpo Bangladesh 2014, a two day Indian textile exhibition opens in Dhaka today Monday at Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel in the city. The exhibition has been jointly organised by the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC) of India and Indian High Commission (IHC) in Bangladesh.

Mirza Azam, state minister textiles and jute is likely to open the exhibition.

Thailand looks in to develop as a global leader in fashion and textile design by 2030, as the Thailand Textile Institute (THTI) prepares 15-year strategies to develop the Thai textile industry.

This was announced by Pramote Withayasuk, Vice Minister for industry on Monday at THTI's textile and fashion annual conference in Bangkok during which an expo on award-winning entries from the Creative Textiles Award 2014 contest was held.

The Uttar Pradesh weavers and artisans to see good days as various schemes will start taking shape soon, said Union minister of state for textiles (independent charge) Santosh Kumar Gangwar here on Friday. There will be no lack or shortage of funds for handloom and handicrafts as the Central government is committed to uplift the living standard of handloom weavers and artisans.

Gangwar is also in talks with UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to develop the cultural complex as a centre of excellence and bring other projects like Textile Park to improve the sector.

Karnataka has always had a tradition of tapping the best across India and the world to trace a steady growth curve across diverse sectors of the economy. Minister for Textile, Baburao Chinchansoor on Saturday stated that the department plans to open eight textile parks in the coming months.

To set up these textile parks, they may require land in the range of 15 to 50 acres. They will be inaugurated in Bellary, Bijapur, Chamarajnagar, Channapatna, Davangere, Bagalkot, Mysore and Gulbarga.

Bangladeshi dyed yarn exporters to get financial support to help speed up export growth. They will be provided with credit support from Export Development Fund (EDF), a special fund of the central bank.

According to a circular of the central bank, issued on Tuesday, members of the Bangladesh Dyed Yarn Exporters' Association (BDYEA) will be eligible to get financial support from the EDF.

China likely to struggle to meet demand for cotton with plunge in cotton yield

The cotton growing area in China in the 12 months is expected to decline to 63.40 million mu (about 4.23 million hectares), down 9.4 percent from the previous year, and the cotton yield is also forecast to plunge by half a million tonnes to 6.5 million tonnes, according to Lian Weiliang, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission.

While, cotton demand in China is expected to exceed its domestic supply by two million tonnes in the year from September 2014 to August 2015, as per official data showed on Thursday.
