PRGMEA organizes International Textile Asia Exhibition

The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has organized a three day ‘International Textile Asia Exhibition’ where more than 350 international brands from around 29 countries have displayed their products at more than 500 stalls at the Expo Centre. A large number of industrialists, businessmen, exporters and citizens attended the event on the first day.

After the recent signing of FTA’s, many foreign investors have been attracted to Vietnam according to the chairman of the HCM City Association of Garment Textile Embroidery and Knitting. But the FTAs not only bring opportunities but also challenges and risks for Vietnamese companies.

Việtnam depends on imported raw materials from China, Korea and Taiwan, and the sector does not create much value addition in the supply chain since it merely does low value-added work such as cut-make-trim services to transform fabric into garments to export.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) during the ongoing budget exercise for 2016-17 is reworking sales tax structure on the five major export oriented sector which includes textile, carpets, leather, surgical and sports goods under SRO.1125. According to Tax experts, sales tax on five export-oriented sectors was declared zero-rated first time through Finance Bill 2005.

Uganda's Textile Industry slowed down due to delayed policy

A decade ago, Uganda produced 254,000 bales of cotton annually, each weighing 185kg. About 10 percent of Uganda's annual cotton output is processed locally and 90 percent of its cotton as lint (primary form) is exported as value addition continues to elude the industry due to the delayed National Textile Policy. The country has more than 38 cotton lint exporters with some ginning.

The Pakistan government has put value addition in textile sector on top priority to double the exports in the sector for the economic revival of country for which there is a need to formulate a comprehensive and long-term policy. As both the government and industry were committed to fully exploiting the potential of all related sectors of textile aiming at to boost its exports for benefit of the country.

A meeting of Federal Textile Board (FTB), Pakistan will be held soon to discuss the issues being faced by textile industrialists and the ministry to addresses these issues.

Telangana plans to set up biggest textile park over more than 1,000 acres in Waranagal district

The textile park to be set up in Waranagal district, Telangana will be the biggest in the state as the proposal is being revised. The revised park will be in more than 1,000 to 1,200 acre from the 100 acres initially planned.

Warangal is one of the key producers of cotton in Telangana district. There are smaller units operating now. However, many traders take the cotton stocks to Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states for value addition. The district also sees large number of people going out in the search of livelihood.

Pakistan textile policy 2009-14 fails to achieve the set export target

The Pakistan Textile Policy 2009-14 has failed bleakly to achieve its target of doubling exports of the country’s textile industry. The plan comprised short-term support actions and long-term initiatives aimed at promoting value addition on a wider scale.

When the policy was unveiled, textile exports were touching $12 billion in 2009-10. Fast forward to 2012-13, the figure went up slightly at around $13 billion. However, the shipments were nowhere near the target of $25 billion.

The textile industry has an 8% share in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

Pakistan Textile ministry attempts to draw investor’s attention through value addition

The Pakistan textile ministry to attract investments into the industry is working on a special package to convert basic textile into value addition. Also every effort are being put in to declare the upcoming fiscal year 2014-15 as the year of textile industry in Pakistan as they stand firm on increasing textile exports by twofold to $ 26 billion by 2018.
