Textile and clothing included in the zero rating proposal by Pak commerce ministry

The Pakistan commerce ministry has proposed zero-rating for major exportable products which includes textile and clothing in the next budget. The proposal of zero-rating would mean no tax, no refund. The other major exportable items are carpets, sports, surgical and leather goods.

Pakistani textile sector has benefited due to the GSP facility but has failed to benefit the country’s economy as the government has failed to facilitate exporters with business-friendly environment due to which Pakistan likely to miss its export target of $27 billion.

According to the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) report, President Dr Murtaza Mughal said that Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) could not pay original refunds of around Rs100 billion, while fake refund claims are being processed immediately.

Policy Research Institute (PRI) of Bangladesh in Dhaka organised a seminar to discuss on "access to finance: environmental sustainability in the textile sector" in association with the International Finance Corporation yesterday wherein the Governor Atiur Rahman took a decision that the central bank will set aside $500 million of low-cost funds for textile factories to help them adopt eco-friendly technologies and practices.

Bangladeshi dyed yarn exporters to get financial support to help speed up export growth. They will be provided with credit support from Export Development Fund (EDF), a special fund of the central bank.

According to a circular of the central bank, issued on Tuesday, members of the Bangladesh Dyed Yarn Exporters' Association (BDYEA) will be eligible to get financial support from the EDF.

Pakistan with around 163000 metric tonnes of cotton grown and processed with Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is Textile industry is currently the leading producer of BCI cotton and is planning to further, undertake an initiative to broad-base the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton production. In order to make the initiative sustainable and expand it to maximum areas of cotton production is preparing a proposal to the Ministry of textile Industry for funding the project from the Export Development Fund (EDF).
