Garment exports hit hard in October as order bookings didn’t happen due to the ambiguities relating to GST. The fall is one of the highest in percentage term, the worst performing export category in October, as per the data with the union commerce ministry.

With readymade garment exports plunging 40.7 percent on a year-on-year (yoy) basis to Rs 5,398 crore in October, exporters have blamed the slump on financial crunch due to the delay in getting GST refunds and reduction in duty drawback rates under the new regime.

The Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) is planning to set up a technical textile cluster in Tamil Nadu for start-ups. The technical textile cluster will have all common facilities including R&D, A Sakthivel, Regional Chairman, FIEO (Southern Region).

The organization is in talks with various agencies to set up a technical textile cluster. Although, at present very few are into export of technical textiles at present but there is immense potential for which the exporters need to look at product diversification to achieve higher growth.

The textile sector was looking up to the Budget for incentives but nothing has been done in this direction, said Telangana State Federation of Textile Associations (TSFTA) president Ammanabolu Prakash on Monday. He expressed disappointment over the absence of measures to support textile traders.

The Federation president Ammanabolu Prakash said that traders play a pivotal role… pay a variety of taxes to the State and Central governments but the Finance Minister has disappointed them by not granting concessions or allocating funds to [help] compete with global market.

Interest equalisation scheme to help textile sector and boost exports

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given approval for interest equalisation scheme (earlier called Interest Subvention Scheme) on pre and post shipment rupee export credit with effect from April 1, 2015 for five years which is welcomed by the textile units.

According to regional chairman of Federation of Indian Export Organisations, A. Sakthivel, who is also the president of Tirupur Exporters Association was of the opinion that the scheme had come at an appropriate time when the apparel exports registered negative growth in August and September on a year-to-year basis.
