Pak textile industry facing supply crisis as cotton trucks stranded in Afghan

With the Ministry of National Food Security refusing to issue permission to the trucks containing cotton from Central Asian states to enter Pakistan, and instead instructed them to seek clearance from the Karachi port. As a result Pakistan textile industry facing supply crisis as over 150 trucks laden with cotton collecting dust on Pak-Afghan border.

According to experts, the local textile industry already facing immense difficulty competing in the region can be hit hard by cotton supply crisis if this issue is not resolved.

The Pakistan textile industry in a way to leverage their exports is trying to focus on providing a competitive business environment as the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma)general secretary Anis-ul-Haq emphasized on the same.

He highlighted that structural balance and viability of industry is essential to compete with the regional competitors, including India, Bangladesh and Vietnam. He said pragmatic and export-led policies are required for industrial growth and enhancing the country’s exports.

The Pakistan textile industry to see new avenues opening for them to collaborate with international buyers and leading brands as the International Apparel Federation (IAF) is planning to open its first regional office at the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Assoication (PRGMEA) House in Sialkot.

PRGMEA Central Chairman Ijaz Khokhar said that the IAF will address major issues being faced by the textile industry of Pakistan and bring those issues to limelight, including compliance, gender training and exchanges of delegations.

Pakistan textile industry has been advised to focus on value addition to compete in the international market as lack of value addition is one of the major reason behind the decline in exports, said Commerce Secretary Younis Dagha on Wednesday while addressing an event hosted by Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

According to Dagha, cost of doing business is higher in Pakistan compared to neighbouring countries, but it is not the only hurdle in exports as they have not played their role in value addition… industrial production remains lower.
