Trade bodies organize seminar to give tips to grow cotton without trouble

Three major trade bodies Indian Cotton Association Limited (ICAL), Northern India Textiles Mills Association (NITMA), and Mumbai-based Indian Society for Cotton Improvement (ISCI have decided to jointly organize a seminar 'Awareness of whitefly and best practices for growing cotton' at Abohar on March 21.

The seminar to be held to discussion and find way to avoid a repeat of the last year's pest attack on cotton crop in Punjab and Haryana. Cotton was sown over 4.5 lakh hectares in Punjab last year and two-third of it was damaged due to pest attack.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a meeting with National Textile Corporation (NTC) official a fortnight ago made it clear that the government would help NTC shut its mills in Mumbai and develop the land, provided it set up textile units in Amravati. The condition is to set up the mills there, operationalize them and only then would the government allow NTC to commercially exploit its land in Mumbai.

The decision likely to be opposed by political satraps in Satara, Sangli, Solapur and Ichalkaranji who have interests in the textile industry in these regions.

Low cotton yield this year in China due to dwindle in growing area

With the growing area of cotton in China this year depleting by 2.9 percent in 2014 has resulted fall in cotton yield. The cotton yield has dropped by 2.2 percent year on year to 6.16 million tonnes, as per National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Nationwide, cotton land has declined 2.9 percent in 2014 from the previous year to 63.29 million mu, about 4.2 million hectares.

China likely to struggle to meet demand for cotton with plunge in cotton yield

The cotton growing area in China in the 12 months is expected to decline to 63.40 million mu (about 4.23 million hectares), down 9.4 percent from the previous year, and the cotton yield is also forecast to plunge by half a million tonnes to 6.5 million tonnes, according to Lian Weiliang, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission.

While, cotton demand in China is expected to exceed its domestic supply by two million tonnes in the year from September 2014 to August 2015, as per official data showed on Thursday.

Govindaraja Textiles to set up open end spinning unit with 35 tons of yarn a day capacity in the US

Shri Govindaraja Textiles, part of the Jayavilas Group, is setting up an open-end spinning unit in Eden, North Carolina. The spinning unit will have 16 machines and its production capacity will be 35 tonnes of yarn a day. The plant is expected to start production by the end of December this year.

Ramkumar Varadarajan, Managing Director, speaking at a roundtable discussion held here on Monday with Vinai Thummalapally, Executive Director of Select USA. Mr. Varadarajan said that they would be investing $45 million in this project.

China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region prime cotton-growing area, which produces about 60 percent of China's cotton on less than 40 percent of the country's cotton-growing land, aims to create 1 million jobs in the textile industry within the next decade. To support its textile industry has decided to pump 20 billion yuan (about 3.2 billion U.S. dollars) fund.
