Abul Mansur Md Faizullah, chairman of Petrobangla, the state-owned gas and power supplying authority, said the government has imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet the demand in the industrial sector. The government has also removed 122 percent tax on import of LNG, putting only 15 percent VAT in place for this imported gas, he said. He said the government has started giving gas connections to the industrial units. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to the prime minister, said the government would launch a crackdown on Titas to cut corruption.

Bangladesh textile millers have imported machinery worth TK71.19 billion in the fiscal year of 2014-15, a short up by over 40 percent compared to Tk50.63 billion in the last fiscal year of 2013-14 as many millers went for business expansion, said Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) president Tapan Chowdhury speaking a press conference on Tuesday. The rise in machinery imports is attributed to the prevailing political stability.

Firstly, the slide in consumption will lower the prices of raw cotton worldwide further, which will also narrow the profit margins in Bangladesh. Secondly, other countries will break into the local yarn market as they will be able to supply the raw materials at cheaper rates.

Bangladesh has witnessed acceleration in machinery imports as entrepreneurs set up 26 textile mills in spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing last fiscal year. According to data from Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, last fiscal year, $445.7 million worth of capital machinery was imported by the textile sector.

Capital machinery imports by the primary textile sector increased about 54 percent year-on-year in fiscal 2014-15 on the back of higher demand for raw materials from garment exporters. A BTMA certification is required for importing machinery for the textile sector.

The Bangladesh Finance Minister AMA Muhith presented the national budget before parliament on 4 June for the fiscal year 2015-16. Its size - in terms of aggregate government expenditure - reflects about a 23 per cent rise over that of the revised budget estimates for 2014-15. It is also 56.8% higher than the actual figure for 2013-14.

The budget has allocated Taka 970 billion for funding the Annual Development Programme (ADP), marking an increase of Taka 22 billion over the revised ADP of Taka 750 billion for the outgoing fiscal.

Bangladesh home textile sector faces negative growth during the first two months of the current fiscal year 2014-15. The major factors which count for blocking the growth of country’s potential home textile exports are European Union GSP facility for Pakistan, appreciation of the local currency against the US dollar and recent political turmoil.

According to Jahangir Alamin, President of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, Bangladeshi-made home textiles are lagging behind Pakistan in terms of cost-competitiveness, one of the major causes of setback.

Bangladeshi dyed yarn exporters to get financial support to help speed up export growth. They will be provided with credit support from Export Development Fund (EDF), a special fund of the central bank.

According to a circular of the central bank, issued on Tuesday, members of the Bangladesh Dyed Yarn Exporters' Association (BDYEA) will be eligible to get financial support from the EDF.

Bangladesh industrial units going through a tough time due to non-availability of gas and electricity connections required to run the factory thus affecting production. Around 400 potential industrial units with an investment worth Tk 200 billion are bulk gas users, already have set up their establishments taking loans from banks but did not get gas connections yet. They could not go for production due to a lack of gas connections for the last four years.
