Project ‘HOW TEXHA’ launched to strengthen value chain of textile sector in Tunisia

The textile and clothing industry in Tunisia plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of the country as it accounts for more than 40% of industrial employment. A project to support the competitiveness of the value chain of the textile and clothing sector "HOW TEXHA" was recently launched in Tunis.

With funding of 3.2 million dinars granted by Switzerland, under the first phase, this project, is the result of a tripartite collaboration (Tunisia-Switzerland-International Trade Center).

UGANDA Manufactures Association to increase the production and consumption of local fabrics and growth of textile industry has urged all government departments and ministries to buy products manufactured in Uganda especially textiles.

According to the executive director UMA, Ssebagala Kigozi, the only way to grow the local capacity in the industrial sector is government departments like the Army, Prisons, and Police should buy these textile products from the local textile industries because they are of quality compared to those that are imported into the country.

The Australian textile industry has launched a new product which is made from wool that is eighteen-and-a-half micron or finer to give a boost to the superfine wool industry.

Traditionally, superfine wool has been reserved for the world's best suits, but now a knitting yarn, using some of the nation’s best wool, has been developed.

The product is likely to bring a success for the 90-year-old Wangaratta Woollen Mills and give superfine wool growers, who have struggled with the declining value of their product, a new market.

Sino Zimbabwe Cotton are currently in negotiations with a local company with an intention to purchase of at least 35 000 hectares of land because they are intending to venture into cotton farming. But Sino Zim is going to continue funding contract farming.

The company plans to increase cotton seed and lint output to 35 000 metric tonnes at its $17 million plant commissioned by President Robert Mugabe in December last year hence its decision to venture into cotton farming.
