TN govt to consider demand by SIMA for cut in VAT on a trial basis

The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) has appealed to the State Government to bring down the VAT rate from 5 percent to 2 percent, as they are gearing up to conduct TexFair 2015 and the second edition of SIMA Farm to Finish between January 9 and 12 at the Codissia Trade Fair Complex here.

SIMA Chairman T Rajkumar said that the association had met the State Finance Minister and Secretary in this regard and they were ensured that their request would be considered on a trial basis initially before regularising it.

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar approved setting up of 13 textile parks for which investment proposals of miniumum Rs100 crore will be considered, this move is expected to generate jobs for at least 2,500 to 3,000 people.

Subsidy amount of 40 crore each will be provided by the Ministry, said Gangwar. After agriculture, it is the textile industry which generates maximum employment

Gangwar has called for a meeting of the state Textile Ministers on 24 September, to seek their inputs on the new Textile policy and other related matters.

This cotton year, India has exported 11.5 million bales, compared with 11.4 million bales in the previous cotton year. It is estimated at the beginning of the next season, export will fall 35-40 per cent.

Currently, cotton exports from India have come to a standstill, as the global prices are on a downward trend, while Indian prices are higher than them.

Sutlej Textiles and Industries Ltd (STIL) at its board of directors meeting held on September 17, 2014 has taken up the decision to expand the operations of one of the Company's Units viz: Damanganga Home Textiles based at Daheli, Bhilad, Gujarat.

The project will be implemented in FY 2015-16 and the capacity will increase to 9.6 million metres per annum. The investment involved in the project expansion will be to the tune of Rs.88.50 crore.
