Vietnam’s southern key economic zone has managed to attract FDI beyond expectation

Ho Chi Minh City, provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai in the Southern Key Economic Zone of Vietnam managed to attract Foreign Direct investment beyond expectations, fulfilling and exceeding its 2014 plans.

In Ho Chi Minh City, FDI capital hit US$1.45 billion in the first nine months, up 6.9 percent over the same period last year.

HCMC People’s Committee said that the city will continue improving investment environment and prepare land fund for foreign enterprises to invest in the support industry.

India garment exports due to steady flow of orders from Europe and a weaker rupee witnessed a jump of 23% in August to $1.38billion. With a robust growth in August, exports in the April-August period hit $7.07 billion, up 18% y-o-y, according to the Apparel Exports Promotion Council (AEPC) data.

Having slipped nearly 6% in the last fiscal and witnessing a drop in 10 of the 12 months of 2012-13, garment exports started picking up since March last year as the domestic currency continued a downward journey and demand from the US started picking up due to an economic recovery.

The government has decided not to sell the loss making National Textile Corporation (NTC) but instead plans to nurture the ailing state-owned textiles firm back to health by disposing of its land worth Rs 1,750 crore in Uttar Pradesh. Textile Minister Santosh Gangwar at the conference said that they are committed to not sell National Textile Corporation.

NTC has 11 places in UP and British India Corporation Ltd (BICL) has 35. The matter has been pending since last 15 years and the government has already wasted Rs 500 crore.

Assam to soon have an integrated textile park and silk testing lab

Assam would soon have an integrated textile park at Naharkatia in Dibrugarh district which will boost its handloom and textile sector. The ARTFED park will be set up under a National Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks, launched in 2005. The park would create nearly 2,800 direct and 4,200 indirect employment opportunities.

The textile park would be set up on 268 bighas of land of Chankharu Pather which will involve investment to the tune of Rs 49.17 crore. While the 90 percent cost would be borne by the Union Government, the land has been allotted by the State government.

With Indian textile merchants keen to exploit rising demand stemming from weak cotton prices and global economic growth, India's cotton and apparel exports is set to climb by around 10 percent this year. Moreover, higher wages, political instability and concerns about workplace conditions in other producing market are pushing international buyers toward Indian exporters.

India’s textile exporters feel the relatively low labour costs in their country, alongside record domestic cotton production this year, should help them gain market share from other exporters in the region.
