Textile Research conclave to begin in Tirupur

Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), NIFT-TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute, and the Indian Texpreneurs Federation is organizing a three day Textile Research Conclave on February 10 under the support of Union Ministry of Textiles in the knitwear hub of India, Tirupur.

The objective of the event is to encourage product diversification, productivity, and sustainability in textile clusters, said TEA president Raja Shanmugam.

The government urged to reconsider the decision to reduce the duty drawback to knitwear export sector from 7.6 to two percent as it would hit hard the garment sector in neighbouring Tirupur export garment sector said , Tirupur Exporters Association president Raja M Shanmugham.

It has come as a rude shock to exporters, who are already facing severe competition in the global market, he said and appealed to the government to have a re-look at the issue.

India's garment exports to US in the category Men/Boys cotton knit shirts has clocked number one position in terms of market share, it is for the first time in the history due to the slowdown in China. According to the data released by Office of Textile and Apparel, US department of commerce, India exported 8.5 million dozens of men/boys cotton shirts to US. India's share in total men/boys knitwear shirts import in US stood at 8.7 percent in June.

At a meeting held with textile minister Smriti Irani in New Delhi, the Tirupur Exporters’ Association president Raja M Shanmugham said that because of its MSME dominant nature and the slender margins in which the textile industry was operating, the entire textile sector may be placed in the lowest slab of the GST so that industry can absorb the levy without any significant impact on the business.

UK’s decision to exit from the European Union which in turn impacted the currency, worries exporters from the tiny town of Tirupur as many of the exporters exports around Rs26,000 crore of knitwear. According to A Saktivel, president, Tirupur Exporters Association, it will be temporary but in the long run this will help them since UK will support more which it could not when it was part of the EU.

EU is a major destination for readymade garments (RMG) export from India. In 2015-16, total RMG exports from India was Rs 1,11,236 crore, of which EU's share was 36.97%.
