According to Sanjay K Jain, Chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry and board member, Cotton Association of India, the matter is currently under deliberation. “The Suvin cotton produced in Tamil Nadu and Shankar 6 produced in Gujarat are both good quality cotton and can be projected as a global brand. The matter is in the deliberation stage,” he told at the session.

The proposal, once ready, would be placed before the Textile Ministry as well as the Commerce Ministry, Jain said. He however was unable to give a timeline for the same.

With the domestic production of textiles at $110 billion and exports and trade at $40 billion, the country's production of textiles at present is worth $150 billion. The Textile Ministry is targeting to double textile production and trade to $300 billion by 2025, said Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta on Friday.

The textile ministry is expecting the finance ministry to clear Rs 170-crore special package for the knitwear sector at the earliest as it is an employment intensive sector so any effort to boost investment will boost job creation and lift sagging exports.

The knitwear industry, which mainly comprises small and medium enterprises, was left out in the earlier scheme of things. Exporters believe that the package can ease the pain especially after the goods and services tax rollout.

India is the second largest exporter of textile and apparel in the world with 5 percent trade share. To boost exports, government has identified 13 countries as target markets as there exists a huge potential for India to increase its market share in various markets by aligning the product with specific market, said textile ministry.

The Ministry of Textiles of the Pakistan Government has issued a notification stating that in pursuance of entry 7 of item 39 of Schedule II of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister package of incentives for exporters was approved by Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet.

The country’s textile and clothing export target is set to $45 billion for the current fiscal, lower than the initial target of $48.5 billion set for the previous fiscal which was missed by a huge margin.
