All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) Patron-in-Chief Gohar Ejaz said the government had recently halved tax rebates that stood at 4-7% and thus things turned unfeasible for textile producers. Ejaz said Pakistan had only adjusted its exchange rate by letting the rupee weaken, but it won’t impact national exports. He said that the rupee had been artificially stabilised at Rs 105 per dollar for the past five years.

The Pakistan textile industry in a way to leverage their exports is trying to focus on providing a competitive business environment as the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma)general secretary Anis-ul-Haq emphasized on the same.

He highlighted that structural balance and viability of industry is essential to compete with the regional competitors, including India, Bangladesh and Vietnam. He said pragmatic and export-led policies are required for industrial growth and enhancing the country’s exports.

The Ministry of Textiles of the Pakistan Government has issued a notification stating that in pursuance of entry 7 of item 39 of Schedule II of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister package of incentives for exporters was approved by Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet.

Pakistan textile industry realized $2.18 billion from its exports in the first two months of the current fiscal year of 2017/18 compared to $2.06 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data. Textile exports increased 5.9 percent as the sector geared up efforts to meet government's exports increment target to qualify for incentives.

Pakistan’s newly appointed Minister for Commerce and Textile Muhammad Pervaiz Malik is mulish on boosting the country’s declining textile exports on priority by resolving traders’ issues. After assuming charge on August 8, Malik said that the government will take all appropriate measures to expedite the finalization of Preferential and Free Trade Agreements with various countries.

Also informed that the process of paying tax refunds to the exporters will be expedited, one of the main issues of the business community.

India has a huge potential to capture the market space by focusing on man-made fibre (MMF) that is vacated by China in the international textile market due to declining China’s textile exports, said Sunil Arora, CEO, Impluse Buying House while speaking at a seminar on "India as a sourcing hub and investment destination" on the last day of Textiles India 2017 trade fair in Gandhinagar.

Synthetic textiles made from MMF account for 70% of world textile supply and the rest is cotton.
