Central Silk Board urges Odisha to send more proposals under CSS

The Central Silk Board (CSB) has earmarked a budget of Rs6.3 crore for the development of silk industry in Odisha State in the current fiscal. They have already sanctioned Rs94 lakh and asked the State to send them more proposals under the Central Sponsored Schemes (CSS), said chairman of CSB KM Hanumantharayappa.

As promised by Union Minister for Textile and Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani during International Women’s Day last year to replace thigh reeling, Hanumantharayappa said that Odisha has so far been provided 106 Buniyad machines.

Bihar agriculture ministry has sanctioned Rs 60 crore for the proposed advanced centre on sericulture (silk farming) at Abdul Kalam Agriculture College in Kishanganj this fiscal to promote silk industry in the state, said agriculture minister Prem Kumar.

The advanced centre will have separate departments for detailed study on mulberry plants, mulberry production, silkworm, silk textile technology and the one dealing with the pest problem that afflict silkworms.

Union Minsiter of State for Textiles Ajay Tamta during his visit to Regional Oak Tasar Research Station (RTSR) located at Mantripukhri said that the Central Government will extend all possible help in promoting silk production in Manipur.

Manipur is the largest producer of silk in the entire north eastern state and there are varieties of silk available in the state and Scientist of the Station need to look into the process of producing new breed for higher production of silk.

Union Minister of State for Textiles (Independent Charge) Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Tuesday inaugurated Apparel and Garment Making Centre, one of the most ambitious projects launched in the textile sector by the government of India at District Industries Centre Complex, 6th Mile Dimapur in north eastern states. Government has set its sights on the development in the organised and unorganised sectors of the textile industry, which is one of the mainstays of the national economy. The initiatives of the government have raised hopes of resurrection of the Indian handloom and textile industries, said K. Radharaman of The House of Angadi, which has a 600-year legacy in the textile trade.

The Annual Conference of State Textiles Ministers was held on Wednesday at Scope Complex, Lodhi Road where Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Gangwar discussed the provisions of the proposed New Textile Policy such as introducing flexible labour laws and setting up integrated textile parks with States.

Participating at the conference, Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Sericulture, Commerce and Industries, Manipur introduced a brief account of the status of handloom industry in Manipur.

MGNREGA scheme to be linked with specific textile sectors not entire textile sector

Textile Minister Santosh Gangwar had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after taking charge requesting him to link the entire textile sector, including garments and fibre, to MGNREGA, rural job scheme.

But, the Prime Minister’s Office has ruled out including the entire textile sector under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA). The scheme will link only specific sectors within the textile industry such as handicraft and handloom.

Silk farming losing favour among farmers on the coast
