‘Mahakhadi’-state govt initiative for handlooms

In an initiative of the Maharashtra State government to make the specific handloom industry a peoples’ movement once again and encourage the sector through new marketing tactics, the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board (MSKVIB) has rebranded khadi as ‘MahaKhadi’ to A ‘MahaKhadi Yatra’.

MSKVIB deputy CEO Bipin Jagtap said that rebranding seemed to be the perfect solution to attract youngsters and take khadi products to the international market.

Anakaputhur Jute Weavers' Association which has been known for using innovative methods has launched handwoven 'herbal' sari on Friday. The unique sari is spun with cotton yarn, which is dyed with natural colours and is immersed into a liquid paste made of tulsi, neem and turmeric. The medicinal properties of these plants act as remedy for all kinds of skin diseases, said the president of the association, C Sekar.

Government has set its sights on the development in the organised and unorganised sectors of the textile industry, which is one of the mainstays of the national economy. The initiatives of the government have raised hopes of resurrection of the Indian handloom and textile industries, said K. Radharaman of The House of Angadi, which has a 600-year legacy in the textile trade.

Setting up integrated textile parks, increasing export, development of handlooms, promotion of handicrafts and increasing sericulture are some of the elements the government has stressed upon.

Minister for Industries and Commerce, Chander Parkash inaugurated a Handloom Cluster Development Project. The project, which has been taken up under the comprehensive Handloom Development Scheme of National Handloom Development Programme, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India

Minster for Industries & Commerce said that this is first such project for J&K, sanctioned by the, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India to empower handloom weavers and build their capacity to enhance competitiveness of their products in the domestic and international market.

The Government had always been keen in the promotion of handloom textile. As one of the major steps regarding the same, a discussion on revival of handloom, with particular focus on increasing earning of handloom weavers, was held according to the statement of the Textile Ministry.

The meeting of the panel comprising stakeholders from government, industry and members of the civil society was organized on May 17 by the office of Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles.
