Gujarat plans to set up textile university for skill development in Surat

Gujarat government to further develop skills in the textile industry, another important industry in Surat after diamonds, is planning to set up a textile university in Surat which would help boost its textile sector.

Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on Sunday at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of 2,000-acres Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City here announced the setting up a textiles university at the proposed smart city- DREAM City near Surat.

She asked textiles players to seek land in the proposed DREAM-city on the outskirts of the Surat city.

Mixed reactions coming in from the Pakistan textile industry on the announcement of its new textile policy 2014-19, according to Pakistan Apparel Forum’s Chairman Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, under the present economic circumstances no better policy could have been expected but stressed on implementing the policy in letter and spirit to get required targets.

He said that the new five-year policy would go a long way in benefiting the entire textile sector and boosting exports of value-added garments and apparel.

Globally, manmade fibre accounts for 70 percent of the fibre consumption while in India; it is less than 30 percent. The Indian textile industry to boost use of synthetic fibre want reduction in excise duty on all manmade fibre and filament from the existing 12 percent to 6 percent. As reduction in excise duty in manmade fibre will lead to increase in demand.

Texpreneurs Forum is planning to submit a report on the financial stress faced by the textile industry in the last 2-3 year to the Finance Ministry for that they are in the process of appointing an external agency to conduct a study of the textile industry.

D Prabhu, Secretary, Texpreneurs Forum said that this is consequent to their meeting with the powers that be at the Centre and the recommendations made by the Textile Ministry to the Department of Financial Services under the Union Finance Ministry for lowering the interest on working capital loan for purchase of cotton.

Mandatory certification for organic textile exports put back by DGFT

The mandatory certification for export of organic products to finished textile products, including yarn, fabrics, made-ups and garments extended by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade DGFT on November 18 has been deferred.

This move came in after Texprocil had urged the commerce ministry to extend the December 18 deadline for mandatory certification to enable the sector to conform to the new procedure.

Industry has welcomed the move stating that organic textile exports would be possible now.

Textile mills demand a separate power tariff

The textile industry of Southern India are demanding a separate tariff or load factor incentive as the textile industry is the highest consumer of TANGEDCO and thus deserves to have a special treatment and concession.

The textile industry runs round-the-clock throughout year and consumes 900-950 units of power for one hour for every MW thus enabling TANGEDCO to make substantial profit when compared to any other consumer.

The new power tariff would seriously affect the competitiveness of the textile mills in Tamil Nadu across the value chain.

Government strives to resuscitate ailing textile units including NTC

The Textile Ministry is working toward resuscitating sick mills including the National Textile Corporation (NTC). The government wants to bring to profit a total of eleven mills of NTC in next three months. NTC had acquired 119 mills, out of which 78 are closed under the Industrial Disputes Act, Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar informed Rajya Sabha.

He was replying to a debate on the Textile Undertakings (Nationalisation) Laws (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2014, which replaces an ordinance promulgated some time back.
