At a time when dumping of Chinese textile products like fabric and garment have been hurting the Indian textile industry with lack of free trade agreements (FTA) and reduction in duty free scripts benefits for textile exporters, a meeting was held on 8th Sept between the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and top business heads of the textile industry to discussion over the issues faced by them and are expecting the central government to take quick action.

The first National Handloom Day will be launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in Chennai on August 7. This day has been chosen to honour the Swadeshi Andolan, which was launched in 1905 and Chennai has been choosen as PM wanted that the event be organized at a place which has more people associated with Indian Handloom, said Union Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar.

The foundation stone for an apparel and garment making centre in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram was laid by Textile Minister Santosh Gangwar today. Apparel and garment making centres are being opened in every state of the Northeastern region as part of the initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 1, 2014.

The centre will be the beginning of setting up an organized industry in Mizoram. The centre will be managed by the Ministry of Textiles for 5 years and will be handed over to the state government thereafter.
