In a report tabled in Parliament today, the Standing Committee on Labour chaired by Kirit Somaiya said that it desires the Textiles Ministry to impress upon the Department of Revenue/Finance Ministry to reconsider GST structure for textiles and impose higher anti-dumping duty to protect the domestic industry.

The Ichalkaranji-based textile sector that employs more than 60,000 people only in Ichalkaranji the autoloom, powerloom, sizing and processing sectors are facing tough time as production has been scaled down to 30-40% because of decline in orders affecting the entire chain of textile.

There are several subsidy components that are closed by the state government which has also affected the industry and trimming incomes, said Prakash Awade, an expert in textile sector.

The ancient Ilkal sarees with unique design which used to be crafted handlooms weavers of a little town of IIkal in Bagalkot district the switch over to powerloom has endangered the livelihood of small handloom weavers.

IIkal town had around five thousand handlooms that used to craft traditional sarees more than a decade ago. Now, the number of families engaged in making beautiful hand-woven sarees has reduced to just 500 with the onslaught of power looms.

The Annual Conference of State Textiles Ministers was held on Wednesday at Scope Complex, Lodhi Road where Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Gangwar discussed the provisions of the proposed New Textile Policy such as introducing flexible labour laws and setting up integrated textile parks with States.

Participating at the conference, Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Sericulture, Commerce and Industries, Manipur introduced a brief account of the status of handloom industry in Manipur.

Devangapuram handloom losing grounds over competition from powerloom

The weavers of Devangapuram, near Chittur, are on the verge of extinction due to poor marketing of the product and tough competition from powerlooms who can sell their produce at cheaper rates. Devangapuram Handloom Weavers Society is the lone body that is engaged in weaving work in the village.

But, the Handloom Society in Devangapuram due to cash crunch it undertakes only small weaving works such as ‘set mundu’ and other items, mainly to cater to the festival season.
