Tirupur garment sector contributes to 11 percent of the State’s export turnover. There is huge potential to double this with friendly-policy interventions for which the textile industry stakeholders in Tamil Nadu have impressed the need for setting up a Textile Board in the State and a separate export policy in line with the Foreign Trade Policy of the Centre for the State.

These were among the 10-point suggestions put forth by knitwear garment exporters in Tirupur for possible incorporation in the new Textile Policy of Tamil Nadu.

Hank yarn obligation is an age old proviso compelling the textile mills from Tirupur and its hinterland to produce a minimum of 40 per cent of the yarn as hank yarn that deterrent to growth and threat to their economic viability. The textile entrepreneurs want the obligation rule either be scrapped or reduce the obligation limit to 10 percent.

The Textile ndustry seeks immediate government intervention as the inordinate delay in disbursement of TUF subsidy is impacting the working capital requirements of the respective units. Technology Upgradation Fund scheme has helped the textile industry to transform into a technologically advance industry but on the other end the delay in TUF subsidy disbursement is choking the mill sector.

The Indian Textile Ministry has decided to put all information related to Textile Upgradation Fund (TUF) Scheme online. This will assist the beneficiaries to overcome any possible procedural hassles and also delay and confusion over the communication. The decision on TUF procedure to be made online as it was observed that of the 23 lakh powerlooms, only about 1.25 lakh looms have taken advantage of the TUF and other schemes.
