Powerloom accounts for more than 86 percent of the total MMF production in India while the rest comes from other segments like handlooms, hosiery and mills. Incidentally, the GST on cotton textile products has been fixed at 5% while GST on man-made fabric (MMF) is kept at the proposed 18% due to which powerloom units will take a hit, industry officials said.

The achhe din for the textile sector has started to arrive, said textile minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Monday, as the Narendra Modi govenrment completes one year. The government has set target of $47.5 billion for textile and clothing exports for the current fiscal year, aiming for an almost 14% rise in outbound shipments from the actual level of 2014-15.

The Union Ministry of Textiles has given approval of Rs 20 crore funds under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) for implementation in addition to existing ones for generating more employment for the youth in Haryana. This information was give by Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma during the ongoing budget session of Haryana Assembly.

Sharma stated that under the scheme 75 percent of the training cost would be provided by the Ministry of Textiles and the remaining would be contributed by the State.

The ancient Ilkal sarees with unique design which used to be crafted handlooms weavers of a little town of IIkal in Bagalkot district the switch over to powerloom has endangered the livelihood of small handloom weavers.

IIkal town had around five thousand handlooms that used to craft traditional sarees more than a decade ago. Now, the number of families engaged in making beautiful hand-woven sarees has reduced to just 500 with the onslaught of power looms.

Handloom Mark made compulsory for weaving sector in Odisha

In a bid to create awareness about benefits of the Handloom Mark, a unique brand image for original handloom goods, the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department has decided to make it compulsory to adopt Handloom Mark for weaving sector.
 
The exhibitions and craft fairs hosted by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, and Government of Odisha will not allow weavers and primary weaver societies to participate in such event unless they take on the Handloom Mark scheme for their hand woven products.
