Mali to focus on direct cotton exports to Indian textile industry

Mali produces long staple cotton and only 5 percent of it is processed in that country and the rest is exported. Recently about 20 percent of Mali’s cotton is consumed by India, said Niankoro Yeah Samake, Mali’s Ambassador in India.

Mali, which produces eight lakh tonnes of cotton a year, is looking at direct exports of cotton to the Indian textile industry. However, most of the trade is through foreign companies. So, there are opportunities to trade directly. Currently, Europe and China are the biggest buyers of the West African nation’s cotton.

Union Ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Ananth Kumar, Nirmala Sitharaman, Radhamohan Singh, Mahesh Sharma and Rajiv Pratap Rudy took part in different sessions at Mahatma Mandir and urged the players to help and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Avision of “Make In India”.

Manmade fiber industry seeks cut in excise rate in next Budget

The Indian textile industry has been demanding a level-playing field with respect to cotton for a long time now and some rationalization is expected from budget 2017-18. The textile industry wants the next Union Budget to reduce the excise duty on manmade fibers and bring it on par with that of cotton.

The argument is that garments produced through manmade fibers are primarily used by the economically weaker sections of society.

The manmade fiber requirement of the Indian textile industry is expected to jump by at least five times by 2025 from what it is now.

The deceleration in spun yarn exports of India slowed down in November 2016 having fallen 21 per cent in volume terms and 14 per cent in value terms. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 90.1 million kg worth US$261.1 million or INR1,733 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.90 per kg which was down US cents 11 from previous month and up US cents 24 as compared to November 2015.
