The Union Government which is keen to promote cotton fibre and handloom products is lent a helping hand by the online retailers viz. Flipkart,Amazon,Snapdeal.

The Andhra Pradesh Government is holding discussions with these plugged-in retailers to sell handloom products on their website.

This will help in introducing an online platform to the workmanship of the handloom weavers as well as recognition to the ancient tradition, which is one of the prime reasons of the Union Government backing these weavers.

India misses the clothing cut in consequence of inadequate incentives, excessive emphasis on cotton fibre and handlooms by the government, flip-flop in raw material policy, faulty duty structure in the man-made fibre segment where imports of certain raw materials (like PTA) are taxed higher than those of finished products and inflexible labour laws.

Flipkart, an e-commerce market place is aiming to ramp up the number of categories of items for sale and connect with more vendors from different parts of the country. The company has set a target to have one lakh sellers hawking their products on its portal.

This year, handloom, home and local artifacts will emerge as prominent categories. They are confident that they will see more sellers from these categories to join them and reach out to a wider range of customers nationally, Flipkart Senior Vice president (market place) Ankit Nagori said.

Paschimbanga Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee during her recent visit to Dhaka observed that Bangladesh and Paschimbanga are the gateway to South Asia and there are enormous economic potential in areas that remains unexplored as yet. Mamata Bannerjee said that they can work together to make the two sides' business destinations for others. The 29th edition of 15 days long Surajkund International Crafts Mela that began at Surajkund, Faridabad on February 1 with 18 countries participating in the 'mela'. Several artists from different countries including partner nation Lebanon and states like Chhattisgarh, Punjab, and Haryana enthralled the audience with their textiles and designs.

The event was inaugurated by the Managing Director of Haryana Tourism and Chief Administrator Sumita Misra, was followed by 'Gaur' dance of the Madia tribe of Bastar in Chhattisgarh.

Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar today inaugurated "Kuttch Mahotsav", a theme-based festival entailing exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts from the region.

In an endeavor to promote handicrafts and handlooms, the government had announced setting up of a handicraft mega cluster in Kuttch, which will focus on hand-crafted items and craft-based textiles.
