H&M and Ikea join to study recycled materials

The H&M Group and furniture giant Ikea have joined together to conduct a large-scale study of recycled textiles, as the companies announced at the 2019 Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference.

The two companies are currently reviewing chemical content in post-consumer textile recycling in a study that has been underway since May 2018.

H&M has been working towards a goal of increasing its use of recycled materials to become more circular, and therefore has an interest in understanding the chemical content of collected pre-owned textiles to ensure safe use of recycled materials.

Major African cotton producer Mali expects to increase output to 1 million tonnes annually within two to three years as it mulls new cotton varieties to boost yields, its agriculture minister said in an interview on Monday.

Mali is targeting a record 2019/20 cotton crop of 800,000 tonnes this year which is expected to make it the top producer in Africa, edging out rival Burkina Faso.

The 2019 edition of the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (TITAS) opened in the Taiwanese capital on October 7. This year’s edition is the twenty-third in the history of the event.

Organiser, the Taiwan Textile Federation, said at the opening ceremony that 423 exhibitors from 12 nations or regions would take part this time, including suppliers of equipment, alongside companies showing innovations in textiles. This makes the 2019 the largest TITAS ever.

Indonesia to tighten textile import rules

Indonesia’s Trade Ministry will tighten restrictions on textile imports in an effort to protect local industries, an official told reporters on Friday.

The ministry will require all textile importers to gain approval from the government before they can ship in textile goods, foreign trade director general Indrasari Wisnu Wardhana said.

The revision to regulations is targeted to be issued before President Joko Widodo, who takes office for the second term on Oct. 20, appoints new cabinet ministers, he said.
