The ancient Ilkal sarees with unique design which used to be crafted handlooms weavers of a little town of IIkal in Bagalkot district the switch over to powerloom has endangered the livelihood of small handloom weavers.

IIkal town had around five thousand handlooms that used to craft traditional sarees more than a decade ago. Now, the number of families engaged in making beautiful hand-woven sarees has reduced to just 500 with the onslaught of power looms.

Gujarat will be the first state to strike deals with commercial online portals to encourage its handicrafts. As the Gujarat State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation (GSHHDC) are in advanced stage of entering into an agreements with Flipkart and Snapdeal.

Gujarat handloom and handicrafts like Patolas, Bandhanis, hand-blocked printing and variety of products from the desert district of Kutch under the brand name Garvi Gurjari will be sold online.

The immediate future of Swaziland’s duty-free export market to the United States (US) through the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is hanging by a thread as Swaziland will be struck off the beneficiaries of AGOA late December, if it fails to meet the benchmarks.

Varying stakeholders from the textile and apparel industry in the country have sent an impassioned request to United States President Barak Obama, to at least give Swaziland a few months more to sort the benchmarks hurdle that resulted in its expulsion from AGOA.

Tirupur knitwear exports in the first six month of the ongoing fiscal year 2014-14 has registered revenue of Rs. 10,050 crores, a growth of 16 percent as against Rs. 8,650 crores in the corresponding period of last year. In Dollar terms, the growth is 13.35 per cent year-on-year during April-September 2014, said Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) president A Sakthivel.

Exporters from this tiny town, the hub for knitwear exports are hoping to close the fiscal with an export turnover of Rs 21,000 crore.

FESPA’s fourth Digital Textile Conference held with the aim of expanding knowledge of digital textile printing took place on 2 October 2014 in Milan, Italy, brought together a record-breaking number of delegates.

Delegates responded enthusiastically to the conference content, with 100% of attendees stating that they would attend the FESPA Digital Textile Conference again, organisers report.

According to Duncan MacOwan, Head of Events and New Media at FESPA, there has been a significant growth of the Digital Textile Conference audience since 2011.
