H&M and Ikea join to study recycled materials

The H&M Group and furniture giant Ikea have joined together to conduct a large-scale study of recycled textiles, as the companies announced at the 2019 Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference.

The two companies are currently reviewing chemical content in post-consumer textile recycling in a study that has been underway since May 2018.

H&M has been working towards a goal of increasing its use of recycled materials to become more circular, and therefore has an interest in understanding the chemical content of collected pre-owned textiles to ensure safe use of recycled materials.

Thirty-two luxury, fashion and textile companies have signed a new commitment to protect climate, biodiversity and the oceans of the world, calling the new initiative the Fashion Pact.

Representatives presented the idea of the new agreement to the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, at a special meeting in Paris on August 23. Mr Macron arranged for the leaders of the G7 group of the wealthiest states in the world to see a presentation on the Fashion Pact during the G7 Summit in Biarritz, which takes place from August 24-26.

Italian textile company Manteco exhibited at Première Vision’s Smart Creation for the first time, showing its range of recycled wool products, including blends with Tencel.

The company processes 1,650 tonnes of recycled material per year, often starting with post-consumer material, which CEO Matteo Mantellassi describes as “a precious raw material for some of the most cutting-edge developments”.
