NTMA and Govt of Nigeria stuck in cotton export debate

A debate has stirred up between the Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Textile Manufacturing Association (NTMA) on the export of cotton from the country.

MTMA’s acting director general Hamman Kwajaffa said at a public hearing organized by a parliamentary committee on industry that it wants a ban on the export of cotton from the country as it is needed for local manufacturing.

Top global fashion brands Calvin Klein, Arrow, Izod and Cherokee are among the international labels that have signed production contracts with Kenyan local textile manufacturers, raising the profile of Kenya's export processing zones (EPZ), according to officials of the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA).

Other brands including Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) started local production in 2014 at Ashton Apparel.

The government of Rwandan in a bid to ensure continued duty free access to the US market has began discussion with the United States on the review of the American Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA). Rwanda Development Board Chief Operating Officer, Emmanuel Hategeka said that they are in talks with the US to ensure Rwanda is not locked out of the trade window.

He said that they are talking to their partners in the US as they value their trade and relations with the US and they are doing all that is possible not to be out of cycle and of course they have been engaging on the issue.

Other areas of intervention include the promotion of the Made in Nigeria Initiative, which involves an e-commerce platform.

Training to be provided to the first batch of 2,000 recruits from the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in the textile and apparel industry, for which the Ghana government will be investing GhC16 million, said the Minister of Employment, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu.

Mr. Iddrisu said that it was the intention of the government to roll out 5,000 persons, mainly unskilled people, and these would include ‘kayayei’ among others.
