The government on Wednesday has directed the Cotton Corporation of India to increase its purchase from the major producers, including Gujarat and Maharashtra as cotton prices have plunged below the minimum support price fixed by the Centre due to an expected bumper harvest.
Prices have also slumped below the MSP in many places because of weak global markets , which has stopped exports.

Pakistan cotton market witnessed rates inching up slightly amid modest trading

The upward trend in the NY cotton futures helped the rates to inch up amid moderate trading in Pakistan cotton market, according to dealers. While the official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5,000.

In the ready session, around 17,000 bales of cotton changed hands at Rs 4800-5300. In Sindh, rates of seed cotton were firm at Rs 2000 and Rs 2050, in Punjab prices of low type gained Rs 100 to Rs 2500 and Rs 2700.

Vietnam is turning up to be a bigger part of the U.S. market in 2014 with its total apparel imports in the first nine months picking up a 1.2 percentage point share gain, from 10 percent in 2013 to 11.3% in 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) data released last week.

In September, U.S. apparel imports from Vietnam totaled a record $914 million, a 22.7% increase over last September, bringing the year-to-date total 15.6% to almost $7 billion.

The Federation of All Trade and Industries Association (FATIA) has urged the state government to take measure to safeguard the textile processing units from collapse, as textile sector ranks next only to agriculture in terms of employment generation.

They have expressed apprehensions over fructification of the proposal for establishing common effluent treatment plant worth Rs. 700 crore benefitting production units in Erode, Namakka, Karur and Salem districts.

Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Mr. Peter Heyward at the Pakistan Australia Business Forum (PABF) said that the government of Australia intends to facilitate Pakistan by changing its tariff regime by greatly cutting tariffs on the import of Pakistani textiles beginning next year. The maximum tariff to be imposed would be five percent.

This step would also help Pakistan in balancing its trade which is still in favour of Australia
