Mombasa Apparels EPZ factory worth $25 million (Sh2.2b) located in Mtwapa, Kilifi County commenced operations last week. The new factory received backing of an investor in the textile manufacturing sector which will manufacture garments for the international market.

Speaking during the official opening of the new factory, Industrialisation and Enterprise Development Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed, said that the facility has already created 3,000 direct jobs with a potential to create another 4,000 jobs in its second phase of development.

Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan's petrochemical giant, has drawn up plans to invest US$2 billion into its US investment projects to capitalise on North America's shale energy revolution, a daily reported on 9 November.

According to Wang Wen-yuan, director of the group, the investment was encouraged by cheap supplies of natural gas, said Economic Daily News and Apple Daily. The international conference on resource efficiency on Thursday called for new legislation to stop the use of restricted/non-approved chemicals and dyes in the textile industry, as it has been observed that many textile industry units in different processes make unnecessary use and waste a lot chemicals and dyes which create serious environment and health problems along with adding to the cost of production.

Nigerian textile industry urging the government to find a win-a-win solution to curb the smuggling activities of textile materials into the country due to which the economy is losing so much in terms of revenue in taxes.

With some few big textile millers returned to local markets to purchase prime quality cotton available at a reasonable price, cotton market in Pakistan witnessed raise in trade turnover at two-week high of 31,800 bales (155 kilograms).
