Synthetic textile exports go up

Man-made fibre (MMF) industry is contributing 2% to India’s GDP and providing jobs to over 18 million people directly and more than 20 million indirectly and technical textiles are expected to see a significant growth in coming time, according to a textiles export body.

Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council chairman Ronak Rughani said with an increasing focus on protecting environment, the demand for man-made fibre (MMF) textiles as a substitute for cotton is growing globally.

As the microelectronic industry is now shifting toward wearable electronic gadgets and electronic (e-)textiles, the comprising electronic materials, such as ferroelectrics, should be integrated with our clothes. Nylons, a family of synthetic polymers, were first introduced in the 1920s' for women's stockings and are nowadays among the most widely used synthetic fibers in textiles. They consist of a long chain of repeated molecular units, i.e. polymers, where each repeat unit contains a specific arrangement of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen with carbon atoms.

With production on a nosedive, all is definitely not well in the country’s largest man-made fabric (MMF) hub. Polyester fabric has decreased production by almost half from 13,000 metric tonne (MT)to 7,500MT per annum.

The 2019 edition of The Fashion Summit, which bills itself as Asia’s sustainable fashion event, will go ahead in Hong Kong on September 5 and 6.

Co-organisers include the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel, the Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium and the Clothing Industry Training Authority.

Italian textile company Manteco exhibited at Première Vision’s Smart Creation for the first time, showing its range of recycled wool products, including blends with Tencel.

The company processes 1,650 tonnes of recycled material per year, often starting with post-consumer material, which CEO Matteo Mantellassi describes as “a precious raw material for some of the most cutting-edge developments”.
