PrimaLoft ties up with Parley for the ocean

PrimaLoft and environmental organisation Parley for the Oceans have announced a strategic partnership that will take plastic intercepted from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities and use it to manufacture high-performance insulation products.

PrimaLoft, a leading expert in advanced material technology, will be the first insulation provider in the textiles industry to partner with Parley to develop products from marine plastic waste. This represents another step forward for PrimaLoft in its efforts to be Relentlessly Responsible.

UNIQLO founder and chairman Tadashi Yanai — Japan’s wealthiest man — who runs one of the world’s largest apparel retail company Fast Retailing Group said the company has made significant investments in India ahead of the brand’s maiden store launch in the country on Friday.

China produces two third of global fibre

The vice-president of China’s National Textile and Apparel Council, Xu Yingxin, has said the textile industry is still one of the pillars of the Chinese economy and provides employment to more than 20 million people there.

Speaking at the Intertextile Shanghai exhibition at the end of September, Mr Xu said that, in 2018, China’s total mill fibre consumption reached 54.6 million tonnes and fibre production exceeded 50 million tonnes, accounting for more than two-thirds of global fibre production.

Kontoor releases forest friendly sourcing policy

Denim group Kontoor Brands, owner of Wrangler and Lee, has published its first forest-derived materials (FDM) policy, which sets standards for the company’s purchasing and use of sustainable forest materials and products.

Until May, the group was part of VF Corp, which published its FDM policy in 2017.

Hyosung to debut recycled spandex

Fibre manufacturer Hyosung will be presenting an updated collection of its recycled fibres at the upcoming Intertextile Shanghai show (September 25 to 27), including its first innovations in recycled spandex.

It claims its recycled yarns offer the same performance levels as its standard products.

The South Korean group will also show its cooling fibres, mipan regen aqua x nylon and regen askin, and its natural touch polyester cotna fibre. It will also focus on creora Color+, a spandex that provides vibrant colours for nylon.

Advance textiles recycling in Finland

A new infrared-based technology promises to give textiles recycling a giant leap forward by replacing manual sorting with an automated method, according to its developers.

Southwest Finland-based recycling firm LSJH has developed technology for sorting waste textiles in collaboration with the Lahti University of Applied Sciences and materials sensor equipment manufacturer Spectral Engines.

Biodegradable trainer created by Brazilian companies

Eight Brazilian companies have worked together to produce a shoe made with biodegradable materials and which they claim uses 30% fewer processes in its production compared with traditional methods.

Fibre manufacturer Rhodia supplied the Amni Soul Eco biodegradable polyamide yarn for the upper, which was knitted by Bertex.

The insole, also made of Amni Soul Eco yarn, was developed by the Cofrag Group, and Linhasita supplied Green Fibre biodegradable polyamide stitching thread.

Synthetic textile exports go up

Man-made fibre (MMF) industry is contributing 2% to India’s GDP and providing jobs to over 18 million people directly and more than 20 million indirectly and technical textiles are expected to see a significant growth in coming time, according to a textiles export body.

Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council chairman Ronak Rughani said with an increasing focus on protecting environment, the demand for man-made fibre (MMF) textiles as a substitute for cotton is growing globally.

Cotton yarn exports fall to 25% in Q1

The export of cotton yarn has dropped 35% in the first quarter of FY20 to $696 million compared to $1.063 billion in the same period last fiscal.

Quoting government sources, the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) said that in April the fall was 21% to $266 million compared to $337 million in the same month previous year. May saw a decline of 31% to $241 million against $349 million in May 2018 and June saw a whopping decline of 50% to $188 million compared to $378 million reported in June previous year.

Textile upcycling system launched by Novetex

Novetex Textiles has opened The Billie System, its new Tai Po textile mill, the first in Hong Kong in over half a century. A key component of this mill is a waterless system which upcycles textile waste.

The system is almost entirely automated, and able to process up to three tonnes of recycled fibre per day, which according to Novetex can be further blended with virgin material to produce yarn for various products and garments.
