H&M and Ikea join to study recycled materials

The H&M Group and furniture giant Ikea have joined together to conduct a large-scale study of recycled textiles, as the companies announced at the 2019 Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference.

The two companies are currently reviewing chemical content in post-consumer textile recycling in a study that has been underway since May 2018.

H&M has been working towards a goal of increasing its use of recycled materials to become more circular, and therefore has an interest in understanding the chemical content of collected pre-owned textiles to ensure safe use of recycled materials.

And as it expands to more Indian cities, IKEA might make and exact copy it’s strategy of having smaller stores. In all, the company has outlined a plan to set up to 25 outlets across India over the next decade. But the Swedish furniture retailer has some unusual plans for the 20 million residents of Mumbai and its neighbourhood. IKEA will launch it’s small stores in city’s outskirts and an e-commerce service for what it believes is one of it’s most important markets in the country.

Bal Tekstil, professional manufacturer of carpets and rugs in Ontustik, the South Kazakhstan region’s special economic zone, since 2011 has signed a supply contract with IKEA, Sweden’s international home furnishings retailer.

Carpets are woven from three kinds of threads. The transverse warp thread is jute, which is produced in Bangladesh, where they buy it. A longitudinal thread is a mixture of cotton and polyester. They import it from India or China. Pile thread is made from polypropylene, but polypropylene has to be purchased in Russia.

IKEA, the Swedish furniture company, 10 percent of whose global cotton suppliers are from India, plans to increase sourcing of cotton from India for its textile requirements as it gears up to start retail operations there by next year.

The company, which is working with around four lakh farmers in India through local partners under its better cotton initiative (BCI) programme, is sourcing almost one-third of its global requirements from India.
