The textile and sustainability manager at The European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC), Marie Demaegdt, has said she welcomes targets fashion group Inditex has set for linen.

Inditex chief executive, Pablo Isla, told shareholders at a meeting in mid-July that, by 2025, 100% of the cotton, polyester and linen that goes into the products of Inditex’s eight brands (including Zara) will need to be organic, more sustainable or recycled.

Novetex Textiles has opened The Billie System, its new Tai Po textile mill, the first in Hong Kong in over half a century. A key component of this mill is a waterless system which upcycles textile waste.

The system is almost entirely automated, and able to process up to three tonnes of recycled fibre per day, which according to Novetex can be further blended with virgin material to produce yarn for various products and garments.

Falling Indian domestic price gap to boost cotton imports

The continuing contraction in international and domestic cotton prices following higher global production and a decline in domestic output is likely to boost imports further this year, says a report. The gap or spread between global and domestic cotton prices has been on a declining trend owing to higher production in Brazil and China, coupled with a fall in domestic production, says an India Ratings report Tuesday.

Iran aims to be self-sufficiency in cotton production by 2025

According to Ebrahim Hezarjaribi, the executive of the Cotton Project at the Ministry of Agriculture, Iran’s annual cotton production will reach 386,000 tons by 2025, making the country self-sufficient in using the material in the textile industry.

Last Iranian year (ended March 20), the country’ self-sustainment coefficient stood at about 45%, he said, adding that figure in envisaged to reach 58% this year.

According to him, the cotton sowing area is expected to reach 82,000 hectares this year.

It is expected that 228,000 tons of cotton will be harvested this year, he added.

Australian textile company calls for ban on nylon and PET carpets

Nylon and PET plastic pile carpet should be banned because of toxic chemicals added to them, according to the managing director of Australian woollen carpet company Supertuft.

In an open document, Greg Galt voices concerns over "toxic fire retardants" and stain resistant chemicals. "Carpets that have a toxic and non-biodegradable pile are accumulating on the floors of residences and offices all over the country," he warns. "When it comes time to replace these carpets, local municipalities and governments will realise that they have an environmental catastrophe on their hands."
