The Russian technical textiles industry may receive an additional impetus for growth this year, thanks to the recently announced government plans to ease the existing restrictions on global producers taking part in public tenders for the purchase of innovative textile products for state needs.

After a Russian jet was shot down along the Syrian border on November 24 2015, Russia has imposed economic sanctions on Turkey.

Moscow has banned the import of some Turkish goods, imposed restrictions on travel, and plans to stop some Turkish companies doing business in Russia.

Turkey's ready-to-wear exporters, who have been affected by the Moscow sanctions, eye new markets in Africa to compensate the Russian losses in textile.

The textile industry in Russia has an ethical tradition and commands respect in the global market . Though the Russian textile industry faced challenges in the nineties, it is now emerging as a competitive industry. The Russian authorities have invited foreign clothing brands to localize their production in Russia, with new factories being offered long-term tax breaks until 2025, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Viktor Yevtukhov said.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev mulling over improving domestic textile industry for which a meeting will be held on Friday in the Russian city of Ivanovo, known as Russia’s textile capital.

The participants in the meeting will consider the situation in the textile industry and its prospects alongside primary supplies to the textile industry and an impact of illicit manufacture and illegal imports of goods on the industry.
