The Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile is proving to be a relevant and effective way of improving sustainability in the sector, according to a new independent report.

The vice-president of China’s National Textile and Apparel Council, Xu Yingxin, has said the textile industry is still one of the pillars of the Chinese economy and provides employment to more than 20 million people there.

Speaking at the Intertextile Shanghai exhibition at the end of September, Mr Xu said that, in 2018, China’s total mill fibre consumption reached 54.6 million tonnes and fibre production exceeded 50 million tonnes, accounting for more than two-thirds of global fibre production.

Molecular technologies specialist Applied DNA Sciences (ADNAS) has received an order of US$1 million to supply its SigNature T tagging technology for the 2019/20 cotton ginning season which begins in October.

The Company’s SigNature T technology, paired with its genotyping and digital systems, will be utilised to tag, test and track the Pima variety of cotton – sold by the brand PimaCott – over the coming months in San Joaquin Valley, California.

Cotton futures close low

Cotton futures closed lower Thursday on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE).

The most active cotton contract for January delivery lost 85 yuan (12.02 U.S. dollars) to close at 12,890 yuan per tonne.

On Thursday, the total trading volume for 6 listed cotton futures contracts on the ZCE was 292,860 lots with a turnover of 18.93 billion yuan.

As the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of textile, China listed cotton futures on ZCE in June 2004, helping cotton-related enterprises hedge the price risk.

450,000 metric tons of cotton to be produced by Nigeria in 3 years

Nigeria aims to produce up to 450,000 metric tons of cotton in three years, as part of efforts to revive the local textile and garment industry, said the apex bank in a statement on Friday.

Up to 300,000 local farmers will be engaged to achieve this aim in 26 out of the 36 states of the country, said the statement by Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

To revive the cotton, textile and garment industry, the bank had supervised the cultivation of 200,000 hectares of hybrid cotton distributed to 200,000 local farmers across the country.
