H&M and Ikea join to study recycled materials

The H&M Group and furniture giant Ikea have joined together to conduct a large-scale study of recycled textiles, as the companies announced at the 2019 Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference.

The two companies are currently reviewing chemical content in post-consumer textile recycling in a study that has been underway since May 2018.

H&M has been working towards a goal of increasing its use of recycled materials to become more circular, and therefore has an interest in understanding the chemical content of collected pre-owned textiles to ensure safe use of recycled materials.

DuPont Biomaterials and Lenzing are launching a fabric collection made predominantly of fibers derived from natural materials. The collaboration blends DuPont™ Sorona® fibers and TENCEL™ Lyocell and TENCEL™ Modal fibers from Lenzing, to give extremely soft garments greater resilience in stretch, recovery and dimensional stability. The new certified mill-collection will expand the future of sustainable textiles for designers to use in various applications, including active wear, ready-to-wear, intimate apparel and denim.

Largest TITAS opens in Taipei

The 2019 edition of the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (TITAS) opened in the Taiwanese capital on October 7. This year’s edition is the twenty-third in the history of the event.

Organiser, the Taiwan Textile Federation, said at the opening ceremony that 423 exhibitors from 12 nations or regions would take part this time, including suppliers of equipment, alongside companies showing innovations in textiles. This makes the 2019 the largest TITAS ever.

Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) today announced it is granting more than $380,000 to the second class of LS&Co. Collaboratory fellows who are working to create a more sustainable apparel industry. The funding will go toward new approaches and innovations in the apparel supply chain that address issues related to climate change.

Hyosung to debut recycled spandex

Fibre manufacturer Hyosung will be presenting an updated collection of its recycled fibres at the upcoming Intertextile Shanghai show (September 25 to 27), including its first innovations in recycled spandex.

It claims its recycled yarns offer the same performance levels as its standard products.

The South Korean group will also show its cooling fibres, mipan regen aqua x nylon and regen askin, and its natural touch polyester cotna fibre. It will also focus on creora Color+, a spandex that provides vibrant colours for nylon.

German textile industry to go green

German Development Minister Gerd Müller (above right) presented the country's new "Green Button" seal for sustainable textiles on Monday. The new scheme is meant to ensure that consumers can purchase clothing that has achieved certain social and environmental standards, including a minimum wage for textile workers and a ban on child labor, as well as the use of certain chemicals and air pollutants.

Innovation hubs Fashion for Good and The Mills Fabrica have teamed up with the C&A Foundation to launch an investment fund that will aim to “spearhead systemic change in the apparel and footwear supply chain”.

The Good Fashion Fund has launched with initial funding of $13 million, but has a target of quickly attracting new investors and raising the size of the fund to $60 million . It will be managed by specialist Amsterdam-based investment firm Fount.
