The textile industry of Southern India are demanding a separate tariff or load factor incentive as the textile industry is the highest consumer of TANGEDCO and thus deserves to have a special treatment and concession.

The textile industry runs round-the-clock throughout year and consumes 900-950 units of power for one hour for every MW thus enabling TANGEDCO to make substantial profit when compared to any other consumer.

The new power tariff would seriously affect the competitiveness of the textile mills in Tamil Nadu across the value chain.

India is expected to become the world’s largest cotton exporter this year, but cotton exports are expected to see a decline to around 5 million (480 lb) bales in 2014-15, almost 47% from the previous year as it has been hit by import restrictions in China, the world’s largest importer. This has also led to a decline in prices in India as well.

Cotton prices may have bottomed out but a weakening rupee and arrival of better quality crop likely to improve prospects.

Organic certification made mandatory for finished textile products

Raw cotton export already required certification under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). It is now required of any finished textile product exported as an organic one such as yarn, fabrics, made-ups and garments as the government has made it mandatory.

R K Dalmia, Chairman, The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council said that national standard for organic cotton is a welcome move but the manner in which it is being implemented will create havoc in the organic textile industry and lead to loss of export business.

With the growing area of cotton in China this year depleting by 2.9 percent in 2014 has resulted fall in cotton yield. The cotton yield has dropped by 2.2 percent year on year to 6.16 million tonnes, as per National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Nationwide, cotton land has declined 2.9 percent in 2014 from the previous year to 63.29 million mu, about 4.2 million hectares.

Textile Ministry approves use geotextile to develop infrastructure in NER
