India records drop in November cotton output at 40.2 million bales

India’s cotton yield has recorded a drop in output at 40.2 million bales (170 kgs each in 1 bale) in November during 2014-15, while during the same period last year, total cotton crop stood at 40.7 million bales according the Cotton Association of India (CAI).

The projected balance sheet drawn for the year 2014-15 estimates total cotton supply at 47.39 million bales while domestic consumption is estimated at 30.60 million bales thus leaving an available surplus of 16.79 million bales, said CAI.

The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles which was recently established by German Federal Development Minister Dr Gerd Mueller with the aim of bringing about environmental and social improvements in the global textile supply chain.

Global home furnishings leader, IKEA has announced a new initiative - ‘Make More in India’ aimed at potential suppliers and to expand IKEA’s supplier base as well as the categories of home furnishing products sourced in India. IKEA currently sources for Euro 315 million and plans to double the sourcing by 2020. It has 48 suppliers in India with 45,000 direct employees and about 400,000 people in its extended supply chain.

The exhibition Made in Myanmar: The Art of Textile and Crafts is being organised by Sunflowers Group Social Enterprise, an umbrella organisation of 13 different groups that produce traditional arts, crafts, and textiles with the aim of preserving and promoting traditional methods of making textile, dyeing and weaving.

Sunflowers Group founder Daw Phyu Ei Thein said that Myanmar products have a reputation of being of cheap and poor-quality. They need to improve quality standards and build trust in Myanmar products.

MNREGS likely to be extended artisans and weavers of the textile sector

The centre plans to extend the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) to textile artisans. The move aims to support artisans who are leaving the skills and joining the unskilled labour force, as the latter provides better wages. It is a step to boost to the handloom industry in India.

Santosh Gangwar, Union minister for textiles said that they are considering extending the MNREGS to the handloom weavers and artisans of the textile sector, so that they or their younger generation are not forced to take up jobs under MNREGS which offers better wages.

India sees huge potential for the technical textile sector as sector is expected to grow at 20 percent per annum during the next two years, said Union Minister for Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

Government recognizing the importance of technical textiles in the national economy as well as the potential for increasing production and exports in the sector will be organizing the fourth edition of TECHNOTEX. FICCI in collaboration with the Ministry of Textile, will be holding the event in Mumbai next year from 9 to 11 April.

RIL JV with Ruyi Chinese firm to move its textile business on high growth path

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) entered into the textile business in a small way in 1970s, and since then grown to be a Fortune Global 500 company through backward vertical integration. Reliance on Tuesday, announced its joint venture with China’s Shandong Ruyi Science and Technology Group (Ruyi) that will help Reliance reposition its textile business on a high growth path.

RIL will hold a 51% stake in the new joint venture thus formed while the Chinese partner will hold the balance. The proposed transaction is subject to requisite approvals.

Sintex to set textile processing plant at Pipavav port will see 60-80 percent exports

Sintex Industries Limited a Gujarat based company to set up a greenfield textiles processing plant including spinning and knitting at Pipavav port in Amreli district for which the company would be making an investment to the tune of around Rs 5500 crore. They intend to complete this project by 2017-18. The plant will be set up phase-wise and it will be the 10th plant of Sintex Industries in the country.
