Removal of mandatory registration of cotton exports welcomed by SIMA

Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) welcomed the government’s decision of bringing cotton yarn exports, a manufactured goods under free list by removing the mandatory registration.

T Rajkumar, Chairman, SIMA, said that the mandatory registration had been causing hardships for the cotton and cotton yarn exporters, besides affecting the image of the Nation in the global market .

The industry has been suffering during the last four years due to unwanted procedures and transaction cost.

Indorama Venture Plc (IVL) has announced that (subject to the approval of regulators) it plan to acquire the Asian manufacturing operations of Performance Fibers Asia (PF Asia) from an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners Inc.

The acquisition of PF Asia will both increase IVL's polyester capacity by 2% to 1.82mta (and expand its total capacity by 0.5% to 8.41mta) and boost its High Value Added (HVA) polyester portfolio by 15% to 322kta.

Ease in cotton export norms to have no immediate impact on demand

The Centre government of India has done away with the registration requirement for exports of cotton and its yarn, the exporters now need not register with the Director-General of Foreign Trade before making the shipment. The government said on Monday in two separate notifications.

Earlier, traders were required to register their targeted export volume in advance for the entire year. With the change in rules, it is likely to speed up shipments, particularly when overseas demand for cotton and yarn has dropped sharply.

Local Philippine textile manufacturers are eagerly looking forward to up to 30-percent year-on-year upward spike in sales in the fourth quarter as a result of deteriorating relations between Manila and Beijing over territorial claims.

The Textile Producers Association of the Philippines (TEXPAP) chairman Luna Go said that sales of locally-made textiles and garments were expected to peak ahead of the Yuletide.

As many native Chinese textile traders based in the Philippines had returned to China as angry words were exchanged between the two countries earlier this year.

The Textile Ministry is working toward resuscitating sick mills including the National Textile Corporation (NTC). The government wants to bring to profit a total of eleven mills of NTC in next three months. NTC had acquired 119 mills, out of which 78 are closed under the Industrial Disputes Act, Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar informed Rajya Sabha.

He was replying to a debate on the Textile Undertakings (Nationalisation) Laws (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2014, which replaces an ordinance promulgated some time back.

The Cotton-4 (C-4), the main four cotton producing countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali (C4) in Africa, which account for about 40 percent of the continent’s raw cotton output. have raised concerns over subsidies and trade policies after the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) said in its 2014-15 outlook that world cotton trade could shrink significantly this year and probably in years to come.

At present the labour-intensive jute industry has a total installed capacity of around 29,00 sacking looms, which produce around 20.5 lakh tonnes of jute sacks. The Government’s reported move to "completely phase out" the Jute Packaging Materials Act 1987, will have “negative impact” on the jute industry spread over five States, affecting about 40 lakh workers, growers and their families, said Tapan Sen, Rajya Sabha MP from CPI(M).
