Vietnam recorded trade surplus for third consecutive year

Vietnam recorded a trade surplus for the third consecutive year, after recording surpluses of US$280 million in 2012 and more than US$860 million in 2013. This year it is touched US$2 billion according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

According to the GSO, foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises contributed to the majority of revenues of Vietnam's key export products which includes garment and textile exports, accounts 59.4 percent of US$20.77 billion.

Pakistan plans to import various varieties of cotton seeds produced by foreign firms despite a ban on their import. According to officials in the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency and the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), the move followed claims by foreign seed and pesticide producing companies that adopting new cotton varieties would double Pakistan’s cotton produce from an average 12 to 13 million bales a year to 26 million bales per year.

The festival of Pongal has indeed brought festivities for the Sircilla weavers as they are busy in completing the task given to them by the Tamil Nadu government. This order of 1.73 crore sarees and 1.72 crore dhotis has brought a beam of light for the distressed powerloom weavers.

Tamil Nadu agencies had placed orders for procurement of 30 lakh metres of Polycot (a mixture of Polyester and Cotton) textiles. The workers who earn Rs 100 a day usually are now earning anywhere between Rs 300 to Rs 450 a day.

The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL), Indian Cotton Federation (ICF), South India Spinners Association (SISPA) and other stake holders has submitted a joint memorandum to Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce & Industry urging for a cut in duties to revive the industry.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first announcement in Nagaland that the Centre would set up one modern apparel garment manufacturing center in each of the eight North East states, the union textiles ministry has finalized a policy under which the Central government would bear the cost of providing 300 machines to each such centre.
