India, Bangladesh has highest number of GOTS-certified facilities

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized worldwide as the leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. GOTS-certified facilities are now located in 64 countries around the world. The number of facilities certified to the GOTS has growth by more than 18 percent last year, from 3,085 facilities in 2013 to 3,663 facilities in 2014.

Countries with the greatest increase in GOTS certification in 2014 are (in rank order) are: India (+338), Bangladesh (+89), Germany (+32), Turkey (+21) and China (+18).

India, the largest producer of organic cotton (approximately 70 per cent of world production) and also home to the largest number of Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS)-certified processing facilities to host the first international GOTS conference: strong partnership for success in Mumbai, India.

More than 1,300 GOTS certified facilities are in India representing more than one-third (approximately 35 percent) of the total number of GOTS certified facilities worldwide.

Organic certification made mandatory for finished textile products

Raw cotton export already required certification under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). It is now required of any finished textile product exported as an organic one such as yarn, fabrics, made-ups and garments as the government has made it mandatory.

R K Dalmia, Chairman, The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council said that national standard for organic cotton is a welcome move but the manner in which it is being implemented will create havoc in the organic textile industry and lead to loss of export business.
